How does it work?
During the day the Astron Solar Floodlights 10 watt solar panel charges its internal 12v 3Ah NiMH battery pack giving it the power it needs to light after dark.
Automatic Function:
After dark the Astron will come on automatically each night.
Manual Function:
The Astron Solar Floodlight can be controlled manually by using the included remote control which has a range of up to 50 metres. The remote control allows you to turn the Astron on or off whenever you like and also enables you to put the Astron back into automatic mode.
How long does it take to charge?
In late Spring, Summer and early Autumn the Astron will fully charge on most days giving it enough charge to light for 12 hours. In winter the Astron will charge up enough to light for 6 hours on all but the most unfavourable of winter weather days.

What's in the box?
The Astron Solar Floodlight comes with everything you need in the box.
- 1 x Astron Solar Floodlight
- 1 x Remote control
- 1 x 10 Watt Solar Panel
- 5m of cable attached to solar panel
- 2 x Solar panel u-mounts
How do I install it?
Find the best location for your solar panel within 5 metres of where you plan to have the floodlight. The location needs to be as south facing as possible and free from light obstructions such as buildings, trees, fences, bushes or the shadows that these create.
- 1. Connect the u-shaped solar panel mounts to the solar panel
- 2. Position solar panel in desired location and mark holes in u-mounts
- 3. Drill holes, apply screw plugs and screw panel into place
- 4. Remove bracket from light and position in desired location
- 5. Mark holes in bracket, drill holes and insert screw plugs
- 6. Screw bracket into place and reconnect light to it
- 7. Connect solar panel cable to light and turn on
How waterproof is it?
The Astron Solar Floodlight is IP56 rated.
Waterproofing is rated by the IP (International Protection) system which consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. The first digit after IP ranks a products protection against solid objects. The second digit after the IP rates a products ability to protect against liquids.
The Astron Solar Floodlight is IP56 rated making it our most waterproof light yet. IP56 means the Astron is protected against dust - limited ingress (no harmful deposit) and protected against strong jets of water e.g. for use on shipdecks - limited ingress permitted.
Why is the Astron more expensive than your solar security lights?
Solar security lights are designed to come on as and when they detect motion after dark. A busy solar security light should not be activating more than 20 times in a night so the battery and solar panel only need to be big enough to provide 30 minutes of light each night. In comparison, the Astron needs to stay on constantly for 6 hours after a single days charge in fair winter weather conditions. The Astron has 4 times more solar panel than the Evo56 and it has over 3 times the battery capacity. It is also manufactured to a much higher standard so it is fit for commercial and industrial applications.
FAQ
Q Can the Astron remote control be overridden?
A Yes. The power button on the light unit will override the remote control function. The remote control will only operate if the power switch on the light unit is turned on.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q When will the Astron become available?
A Mid to late May 2011.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q Does the Astron have a timer?
A Yes. Once the Astron is turned on (either manually or automatically when it gets dark) the Astron will stay on for 6 hours before turning off automatically. If you want to extend this time you can do so by turning the light off and on to restart the 6 hour timer.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q How will I know if the Astron has received the signal from the remote control if I press the buttons during the day when the light is always off? What if I was out of range or the battery in the remote had run flat, how would I know?
A Good question. During the day if you press the 'off' button on the remote control the Astron will flash 5 times to let you know that it is now turned off and will not come on after dark. If you press the 'on' button during the day, the Astron will flash 3 times to let you know it will come on automatically after dark.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q Where is the light sensor on the Astron? Is it on the light or the panel?
A The light sensor is on the solar panel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q You say the Astron can be used as a portable work light, how does this work?
A Once the Astron has charge you can disconnect it from the solar panel and use it as a portable light. The wall bracket on the Astron has also been designed to be an effective stand which will enable you to sit the Astron where ever you need light. It is also worth mentioning that if the Astron is disconnected from the solar panel it will work no matter how light or dark it is because the light sensor is in the solar panel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q I like the idea of using this light as a portable work light for occasional use. Once I've charged it up I would want to keep it in my van so how long will the battery hold the charge it has stored if it isnt being used?
A If the Astron was not being used and was disconnected from the solar panel it would hold the charge for around 4-6 months depending on temperature and other environmental factors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q What is the boxed weight of the Astron?
A 3.5 KG including box (Light Unit is 2KG, Solar Panel is 1.3KG)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q If the Astron comes on for about 6 hours after charging during fair winter weather, I suppose it will run for much longer after charging in clear sunny weather?
A Yes. On a clear summers day the Astron will fully charge giving you 12 hours of light time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q Is it possible to use this floodlight as a normal switched (wall mounted switch) device, just like a normal light?
A Yes. You can wall mount the Astron and operate it like a normal switched device by using the switch on the Astron or the Astron remote control to turn it on or off.
