Water Floating Lanterns -History and Origins
The water floating lanterns found its origins of Loy (to float) Krathong (lotus shaped receptacles), some 700 years ago.
The earliest water floating lanterns were originally made from natural materials, such as the trunk of a banana tree which was cut for a base, while the banana leaves (Krathong) were carefully folded in the shape of lotus petals and attached to the banana tree base. They added a candle and incense, a strand of hair and a coin, then light the candle and incense, say a prayer to the spirit of the water and place them carefully in the water.
The light from the water floating lanterns also symbolizes for persons to make a fresh start and according to the legend, if two lovers set a Krathong into the water and it stays afloat, its flame is also said to signify longevity, fulfilment of wishes and release from sins.
