In China, sky lanterns are ‘wish lanterns', in Japan they signify peace, prosperity, and good harvest. Buddists light up the sky to create a path for Buddha's return from heaven, while in India and all over Southeast Asia they represent spiritual offerings during important festivals and celebrations.
The ancient practice of sky lanterns, also known as fire balloons, is traced back thousands of years to Zhuge Liang, a brilliant strategist from the Three Kingdom Period in China. They were originally used as a signal of the armies. Traditionally they were made of oiled rice paper with a bamboo frame carrying a small candle to heat the air, Zhuge Liang's innovative invention- hot air rising over cooler air- wasn't discovered in the West until the 17th century.
Deeply symbolic, the sky lanterns are launched during festivals, celebrations, weddings, birthdays, barbeques, friends parties or at family gatherings.
